Tragedy Strikes Navajo Nation Christmas Parade as Suspected Drunk Driver Plows Into Crowd

One person is dead and several others — including a child and a pregnant woman — were injured when a vehicle veered into spectators during a holiday celebration in Kayenta, Arizona.

A Christmas parade meant to spread holiday cheer in northern Arizona turned tragic Monday evening when an allegedly intoxicated driver drove into a crowd in Kayenta, a small community on the Navajo Nation.

According to the Navajo Police Department, the crash occurred around 5:10 p.m., when a vehicle entered the parade route and struck four people. Authorities confirmed that at least one person was killed, though details about the victims have not yet been fully released.

Among those injured were a young child, who remains in critical condition, and a pregnant woman, Navajo Nation President Buu Nygren said in a statement shared on social media.

“This event was meant to bring joy, unity, and holiday spirit to our community — a time for families to come together and celebrate,” Nygren wrote. “No one should have to experience tragedy during a season meant for love and togetherness.”

Police said the driver, who has not been publicly identified, was arrested at the scene. Several vehicles and nearby properties were also damaged in the collision.

The investigation is ongoing and is being handled jointly by the Navajo Police Department, the FBI, and the Navajo Department of Criminal Investigation.

Kayenta, located in the northern region of the Navajo Nation near Monument Valley, typically draws large crowds to its annual Christmas parade — an event cherished by local families. What began as a festive evening of music, lights, and celebration has now left the tight-knit community mourning during what should have been the happiest time of year.

Officials have not yet released additional information about the suspect or possible charges, but updates are expected as the investigation continues.
