PHOENIX — An 8-year-old boy died on Thanksgiving Day after being critically injured by a falling statue at the Arizona Biltmore resort in Phoenix.
The tragic incident occurred Wednesday morning when firefighters responded to a call around 9 a.m. regarding an injury at the iconic luxury resort. According to authorities, “some sort of cement, concrete statue” had fallen on the boy.
The child was transported in extremely critical condition to a pediatric emergency center, where he later succumbed to his injuries on Nov. 28, according to Phoenix Police.
“There are no signs of foul play at this time. There will be no further updates to this case,” police said in a statement.
Unfolding Details
Authorities are still investigating the circumstances leading up to the accident. “We don’t know really … what was going on right beforehand,” a fire department official said. “They’re still trying to figure out exactly what happened.”
First responders were praised for their rapid action. “In situations like this, the best thing that can happen is that the child gets transported to the hospital as quickly as possible, and that’s exactly what happened,” said the official.
The Arizona Biltmore, a landmark resort located at 24th Street and Missouri Avenue, has been a centerpiece of Phoenix luxury for decades. Earlier this year, the property was sold in a $705 million deal.
This heartbreaking incident casts a shadow over what should have been a joyous holiday, leaving the community mourning the loss of a young life.
