Tolleson Meat Plant Fined After Worker’s Finger Amputated in Safety Violation

ADOSH cites JBS Tolleson over missing safety guards, improper maintenance procedures

TOLLESON, AZ — A meat-processing plant west of Phoenix has been fined following a workplace incident that resulted in a serious injury.

In December, an employee at JBS Tolleson lost a finger after it became caught in a moving machine chain during maintenance, according to a report released by the Arizona Division of Occupational Safety and Health (ADOSH).

The agency cited the company for serious safety violations, issuing a $12,524 fine. ADOSH found that the machine lacked required safety guards and that the employee was wearing loose-fitting cotton gloves, increasing the risk of entanglement.

The report recommended that employees wear tight-fitting clothing and perform maintenance like oiling only when machines are shut off, whenever possible.

This latest fine adds to growing concerns about workplace safety at the Tolleson facility.
