Three Inmates Hospitalized After Crash Involving Tempe Jail Transport Van in Phoenix

Van struck by vehicle that failed to yield; investigation ongoing

PHOENIX — Three inmates were taken to the hospital Wednesday morning following a collision involving a Tempe City Jail transport van, authorities confirmed.

The incident occurred just before 7:45 a.m. near Seventh Street and Buckeye Road in Phoenix. According to the Phoenix Police Department, the van was returning nine prisoners to the Tempe City Jail at the time of the crash.

The Tempe Police Department said the van was hit by another vehicle that failed to yield while making a left turn, leading to the collision.

Three adult prisoners were transported to a local hospital as a precaution, though no life-threatening injuries were reported. None of the detention officers on board were injured, police said.

Authorities have not released further details about the driver of the other vehicle or whether any citations have been issued. The investigation into the crash is ongoing.
