The Future of Flake’s Seat

Arizona was left in a state of shock after U.S. Jeff Flake announced that he would not be running for re-election. After the surprising news, a name that was immediately thrown around was current Arizona governor Doug Ducey. Ducey took office in 2015 and ran on the promise of making Arizona a better state for businesses and improving education.

Responding to a tweet, the governor’s chief of staff stated that he would not join the race. Last week, Ducey told KTAR News that he plans to “continue being the governor.” He went on to state that he loves the job of being governor and helping to improve the state.

Arizona senator, John McCain, is another name that has caused a stir in Arizona’s political scene. In July, McCain was diagnosed with brain cancer. Ducey would be required to appoint someone to take McCain’s seat if medical reasons force him to give up his seat before the end of his term.

Ducey claims that he has not given much thought as to the question of McCain’s potential open seat. He stated that “John McCain is the toughest man in the United States Senate.” Ducey is prepared to handle whatever happens in the future.
