Tempe to Build First Biomedical Campus

The City of Tempe, Arizona will be moving forward with its plan to develop Tempe’s first biomedical and technology campus. The campus is to be built upon an 18 acre plot of Tempe land west of the Tempe Center for the Arts on Rio Salado Parkway.

Following a Request for Qualifications issued by the City of Tempe, the Tempe City Council selected a partnership of three businesses to handle the negotiation process for a development agreement on Thursday, August 18th. The team selected to assist in the development of the city’s new project is made up of The Boyer Company, SmithGroupJJR and Okland Construction. This partnership of businesses scored highest in an evaluation process based on experience, financial strength, project design and organizational capacity.

Regarding the size of Tempe’s new project, the development team has proposed a square footage totaling approximately 1 million square feet, made up of five 5 to 8-story buildings. The development team also proposed two parking structures that will include nearly 2,500 parking spaces. The 1 million square feet campus is also being designed to include a restaurant, arts-related spaces and trails that connect to the Tempe Center for the Arts and Town Lake pathways.

“The Boyer Company and the members of our development team appreciate the opportunity to work with the City of Tempe.” said Matt Jensen, partner and senior project manager for the Boyer Company. “The project’s close proximity to ASU, key Tempe employers, the airport and area freeways make this an ideal location. Our company is focused on developing projects that help build communities.  This project has the potential to create a technology-focused area that will benefit the region.”

The development team and City of Tempe staff are set to begin crafting a development agreement, which the Tempe City Council will have to approve. The estimated time to complete this phased project is unknown.
