More than a year after flames tore through its kitchen, a longtime Tempe breakfast institution is ready to flip the griddle once again.
U.S. Egg will officially reopen its original Tempe location this week, marking a fresh start for the restaurant that has served the community for decades. The eatery, situated near Baseline Road and Mill Avenue just south of Arizona State University’s Tempe campus, closed in October 2024 after a late-night kitchen fire caused extensive damage.
Now, following a $1.9 million rebuild, the space has been reconstructed from the inside out — a transformation that ownership says was both painstaking and deeply personal.
The fire, traced to a water heater incident that occurred after hours, sparked a lengthy investigation and involved multiple insurance providers. Rather than relocate or quietly shutter the original store, the Gebran family — who purchased the Tempe restaurant in 1991 when it was the company’s only location — chose to rebuild on the same ground where their local footprint began.
The result is a fully modernized restaurant that still feels familiar to regulars.
Nearly every structural element was replaced during construction. Electrical systems, plumbing lines, roofing, flooring and interior framing were stripped down and rebuilt. The kitchen alone features a new stainless-steel cooking line and hood system, a significant investment within the broader renovation. According to ownership, little remained of the original building aside from its exterior brick shell.
Yet for returning customers, the atmosphere aims to strike a careful balance between new and nostalgic. The refreshed dining room keeps the restaurant’s recognizable layout and charm, updated with brighter finishes and subtle design upgrades intended to preserve the sense of comfort longtime patrons associate with the space.
The reopening celebration is set to include city officials and members of the Tempe Fire Department who responded to the blaze, underscoring the restaurant’s ties to the surrounding community.
More information about the reopening and menu offerings is available on the company’s official website at U.S. Egg.
