Witnesses tried to rescue the 18-year-old before sheriff’s dive teams recovered him from the water Friday afternoon.

An 18-year-old man died Friday afternoon after struggling while attempting to swim across a cove at Canyon Lake, according to authorities.

The victim, identified as Jaysyn Robles, was reported missing near the Boulder recreation area shortly before 1 p.m., prompting a response from the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office Lake Patrol and Dive Team.

Witnesses at the lake told deputies they saw Robles having difficulty in the water and attempted to help before emergency crews arrived. Despite those efforts, rescuers later located him underwater.

Officials said there were no signs of foul play connected to the incident.

Canyon Lake, located northeast of the Phoenix metro area, is a popular destination for boating and swimming during Arizona’s warmer months. Authorities frequently remind visitors to use caution in open water, particularly as temperatures rise heading into summer.
