Suspicious Package at Yuma County Jail Investigated as Terrorism

Bomb squad confirms package contained materials for improvised explosive device before destroying it in a controlled detonation.

Authorities are investigating a suspicious package found at the Yuma County Detention Center as a possible act of terrorism, the Yuma County Sheriff’s Office announced Saturday.

The package, wrapped in duct tape and marked with handwritten threats, was discovered staked into the ground near an electrical box outside the jail. Deputies immediately secured the area and called in the Yuma Regional Bomb Squad.

According to investigators, an X-ray scan confirmed the package contained components that could be used to create an improvised explosive device. After establishing a safety perimeter, the bomb squad neutralized the package with a controlled detonation, rendering the area safe.

No injuries were reported, and the Sheriff’s Office has not released details on potential suspects. Officials said the investigation is ongoing and urged anyone with information to contact the Sheriff’s Office at 928-783-4427 or provide an anonymous tip through 78-CRIME.

The incident follows a string of recent law enforcement responses in Yuma, raising concerns about public safety and security in the region.
