Suspected Shooter Indicted for Deadly Attack at Tempe Park

Aaron Sussex Faces First-Degree Murder and Assault Charges

TEMPE — Aaron Sussex, 37, has been indicted on multiple charges, including First-Degree Murder, for allegedly opening fire at Mitchell Park in Tempe earlier this month, killing one person and injuring two others, according to Maricopa County Attorney Rachel Mitchell.

Details of the Shooting

On February 12, 2025, Sussex is accused of firing into a group of people at the park, striking three victims:

  • One victim was shot in the neck, taken to the hospital in critical condition, and later died.
  • Two other victims sustained gunshot wounds but are expected to recover.

Authorities arrested Sussex the next day at a relative’s home.

Charges Against Sussex

The indictment includes:

  • One count of First-Degree Murder (Class One Felony)
  • Two counts of Aggravated Assault (Class Three Felony)
  • Two counts of Endangerment (Class Six Felony)
  • One count of Misconduct Involving Weapons (Class Four Felony)
  • One count of Disorderly Conduct (Class Six Felony)

Legal Proceedings

  • Sussex is being held on a $500,000 cash-only bond, meaning he must pay the full amount in cash to be released.
  • His trial is scheduled for October.
