Suspected Drunk Driver Arrested After Crashing Into DPS Trooper in Peoria

Authorities say the early-morning collision on Loop 101 left two people hospitalized with minor injuries while the state trooper escaped serious harm.

An allegedly impaired driver was arrested early Saturday morning after crashing into an Arizona Department of Public Safety (DPS) vehicle in Peoria, officials said.

The crash happened around 2:34 a.m. near Olive Avenue and the Loop 101 Agua Fria Freeway, according to the DPS. Investigators said the collision involved only two vehicles — the suspect’s car and a DPS patrol vehicle.

Earlier in the night, Peoria Police officers reportedly spotted the driver near 83rd Avenue and Washington Street, where the suspect had fled from officers during a prior encounter. Police say the driver entered the freeway heading south before exiting at Olive Avenue, where they sped through an intersection and struck the trooper’s vehicle. The impact caused the suspect’s car to roll several times.

Both the driver and a passenger were taken to a nearby hospital with non-life-threatening injuries and later taken into custody. The trooper was not seriously injured but was transported for precautionary evaluation.

Authorities closed the Olive Avenue off-ramp for several hours while traffic detectives investigated the crash as a possible DUI incident.

The Arizona Department of Public Safety said the investigation remains ongoing as officials determine the full circumstances surrounding the collision.
