A man accused of shooting at another vehicle in Avondale died after leading police on a high-speed pursuit that ended in a crash, authorities said.
According to the Avondale Police Department, officers responded to reports of an aggravated assault near Avondale Boulevard and Van Buren Street shortly before 12:40 p.m. Saturday. Investigators said the suspect, identified as 39-year-old Luis Matsumoto, allegedly fired shots at another vehicle before speeding away from the area.
Police located the suspect’s vehicle traveling north on Avondale Boulevard and attempted to intervene. During the incident, the vehicle struck another car near Thomas Road and Avondale Boulevard before crashing south of Bermuda Drive.
Officers found Matsumoto inside the wrecked vehicle and transported him to a nearby hospital in critical condition. Police said he was pronounced dead at approximately 1:30 p.m.
The driver of the vehicle struck during the chase suffered minor injuries that were not considered life-threatening. Authorities also confirmed that the individuals involved in the initial aggravated assault report were not injured.
The circumstances surrounding the shooting allegation and subsequent crash remain under investigation. Police have not released additional details regarding what led to the incident.
