A man who was shot by police during a domestic violence incident in Glendale earlier this month has been released from the hospital and booked into jail, according to authorities.
The Glendale Police Department identified the suspect as Daren Howard, who had remained hospitalized following the May 20 officer-involved shooting near 63rd Avenue and Bell Road.
Investigators said Howard entered a business with a woman who was attempting to purchase a firearm. While speaking with the store manager, the woman reportedly revealed a large cut on her hand and silently signaled for someone to call 911.
Police said Howard became agitated after the manager contacted authorities.
When officers arrived, they instructed the pair to separate. According to investigators, Howard instead grabbed the woman from behind, wrapped his arms around her neck and displayed a knife.
Authorities said one officer attempted to use a Taser, but it was ineffective. A second officer then fired at Howard, striking him.
The woman was safely removed from the situation and treated for injuries investigators believe occurred before police arrived.
Howard is now facing multiple charges, including aggravated assault, kidnapping, unlawful imprisonment and disorderly conduct involving a weapon.
