Suspect Arrested in Fatal New Year’s Eve Shooting in Phoenix

22-Year-Old Charged with Second-Degree Murder in Death of North Phoenix Resident

PHOENIX — Police have arrested a suspect in connection with a deadly New Year’s Eve shooting in north Phoenix.

Jose Gonzales-Hernandez, 22, was taken into custody on New Year’s Day and booked into jail on a second-degree murder charge, according to the Phoenix Police Department. His bond has been set at $1 million, per Maricopa County jail records.

Incident Details

Gonzales-Hernandez is accused of fatally shooting 32-year-old Edi Ruiz inside Ruiz’s apartment near Cave Creek and Greenway roads.

Officers arrived at the residence, located at 15430 N. 25th St., around 5 p.m. on December 31. They found Ruiz suffering from a gunshot wound and pronounced him dead at the scene.

Investigation and Arrest

Homicide detectives took over the case and worked through evidence and information gathered at the scene. The investigation led to Gonzales-Hernandez being identified as the suspect.

He was arrested the following day, police said.

Ongoing Case

Phoenix Police have not released additional details about the circumstances of the shooting, and the investigation remains active.
