Suspect Arrested After Officer-Involved Shooting in Buckeye

Edward Rivas, 51, booked on aggravated assault charges after a standoff with police

A tense standoff in Buckeye concluded early this morning with the arrest of 51-year-old Edward Rivas, who now faces aggravated assault charges. The incident began around 11:30 p.m. on Saturday night when Buckeye police responded to a distress call from a woman claiming her husband was armed and threatening to kill her.

When officers arrived at the home near Miller Road and Burgess Lane, the woman exited the house as Rivas, reportedly armed, emerged and fired at the responding officers. An officer-involved shooting ensued, but fortunately, no one was injured. Rivas then retreated into the residence, leading to a standoff that lasted into the early hours.

Shortly after 1 a.m., Rivas surrendered to police and was taken into custody without further incident. Despite the exchange of gunfire, it was determined that Rivas had not been injured.

Rivas has since been booked into jail, and the Peoria Police Department is conducting an investigation into the shooting as part of the West Valley Investigative Response Team (WVIRT). Further details, including additional charges, may be forthcoming as the investigation continues.
