Surprise Police to Limit Overnight Lobby Access Amid Safety Concerns

Starting Nov. 1, the department’s headquarters will close its lobby at night but maintain 24/7 contact through a new video intercom system.

The Surprise Police Department will soon limit public access to its headquarters lobby overnight, citing safety and security concerns, officials announced Monday.

Beginning Nov. 1, the lobby at 14250 W. Statler Plaza will be locked between 5 p.m. and 7 a.m. on weekdays and throughout weekends. A video intercom system will be installed outside the entrance, allowing dispatchers to communicate with visitors and remotely unlock the doors during emergencies.

Residents will still be able to reach police by calling 911 for emergencies or 623-222-4000 for nonemergency matters.

Police said the change follows an increase in thefts of city property and people sleeping overnight in the lobby.

“This adjustment is about balancing accessibility with security,” said Police Chief Evan Becher, who was promoted earlier this year. “Our priority is always the safety and well-being of our community, and these measures allow us to continue providing reliable, around-the-clock public safety services while protecting city property.”

The department emphasized that patrol operations and response times will not be affected by the new policy.
