SunFed Produce Recalls Cucumbers in Arizona and Other States Amid Salmonella Outbreak

68 People Infected Across 19 States; Consumers Urged to Dispose of Recalled Products Immediately

PHOENIX — SunFed Produce has issued a nationwide recall of all sizes of its whole fresh American cucumbers due to a salmonella outbreak that has infected 68 people across 19 states.

The cucumbers, sold between Oct. 12 and Nov. 26, were packaged in bulk cardboard containers labeled “SunFed” or in white boxes or black plastic crates with a sticker reading “Agrotato, S.A. de C.V.” The products were distributed to numerous states, including Arizona, as well as several provinces in Canada.

According to the CDC, no deaths have been reported, but 18 people have been hospitalized. Illnesses were recorded between Oct. 12 and Nov. 15.

Consumers are advised not to eat the cucumbers and to dispose of them or return them to the store of purchase. The CDC also recommends cleaning surfaces and items that may have come into contact with the cucumbers using hot, soapy water or a dishwasher.

“As soon as we learned of this issue, we immediately acted to protect consumers,” said SunFed President Craig Slate in a statement. “We are working closely with authorities and the implicated ranch to determine the possible cause. Food safety and consumer wellness have been our priorities for over 30 years.”

Symptoms of salmonella infection typically appear six hours to six days after exposure and may last four to seven days. Healthy individuals may experience fever, diarrhea (possibly bloody), nausea, vomiting, and abdominal pain. However, young children, the elderly, and those with weakened immune systems are at risk of more severe or potentially fatal infections.

Consumers with questions about the recall can contact SunFed’s recall hotline at (888) 542-5849 Monday through Friday, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

No other SunFed products are included in this recall.
