Substitute Teacher Arrested After Allegedly Hitting Fifth Grader at Buckeye Charter School

Police say 54-year-old Sarah Short was taken into custody after leaving Odyssey Prep Academy, where she allegedly struck a 10-year-old student during class.

A substitute teacher in Buckeye, Arizona, was arrested Monday after police say she struck a fifth-grade student during class at a local charter school.

According to the Buckeye Police Department, the incident occurred at Odyssey Prep Academy near Apache Road and Southern Avenue. Officers say the teacher, identified as 54-year-old Sarah Short, was involved in an argument with a 10-year-old student when she allegedly hit him in the back.

The school’s resource officer was notified shortly after the alleged assault. By the time officers arrived, Short had already left the campus. Investigators later located her at her Goodyear residence, where she was taken into custody without incident.

Short was booked into the Maricopa County Jail on one count of aggravated assault on a minor, a Class 6 felony.

Authorities did not release further details about the child’s condition or what led to the altercation. Odyssey Prep Academy has not yet issued a public statement regarding the incident.
