PHOENIX — A tragedy unfolded at Maryvale High School on Tuesday morning when a fight between two students inside a classroom ended in a deadly stabbing.
Police say the incident happened around 11 a.m., when an altercation escalated into violence. One student suffered multiple stab wounds and later died at the hospital. A second student sustained non-life-threatening injuries and was also hospitalized.
Authorities confirmed that the suspect, a teenage boy, has been taken into custody. His identity has not been released.
The school went into lockdown following the stabbing as multiple police units secured the campus. By the afternoon, large areas of the school remained taped off as investigators collected evidence.
In response, officials announced that classes will run on a modified schedule Wednesday and that counselors will be available to support grieving students and staff.
The incident has shaken the community. Phoenix Councilwoman Betty Guardado said she was “heartbroken and deeply disturbed,” adding that classrooms must be safe spaces and pledging to work with local leaders to strengthen safety measures.
Arizona Superintendent Tom Horne also issued a statement, calling the stabbing a “terrible tragedy” and praising the school safety officer who responded quickly and rendered aid. He emphasized that the incident reinforces the need for ongoing efforts to make schools safer.
Police are asking anyone with video evidence of the incident to share it through their online portal as the investigation remains ongoing.
