St. Mary’s Food Bank Serves Record 25,000+ Arizona Families Ahead of Thanksgiving

Three-day distribution meets soaring holiday demand with help from thousands of volunteers and community partners

St. Mary’s Food Bank delivered Thanksgiving meals to more Arizona families this year than ever before, wrapping up a massive three-day distribution on Wednesday that saw long lines of cars at its Phoenix and Surprise sites. By early afternoon, the final vehicle had driven off with a turkey, produce and a holiday meal box — part of an effort that reached 11,876 families at those two locations alone.

Statewide, the nonprofit and its network of employees and more than 2,000 volunteers helped 25,523 families prepare for the holiday, surpassing the organization’s goal of assisting 24,000 households.

After completing the distribution, St. Mary’s closed its centers for the remainder of the holiday weekend to give staff time with their own families. Regular operations resume Monday at 7:30 a.m.

The record-breaking turnout was supported by a wide range of community contributors. Local organizations — including Arizona State University football, the Arizona Diamondbacks and the Phoenix Police Department — donated time and funds. One family, led by Jeff and Linda McNeely, made an especially large impact by providing 1,350 turkeys, helping St. Mary’s exceed its target.

St. Mary’s operates year-round to combat food insecurity, distributing millions of pounds of groceries through community partners across the state. More information about donation and volunteer opportunities is available through the organization’s website.
