Sky Harbor Secures $84.3 Million in Federal Funding for New Taxiway Bridge

The project, supported by the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, aims to enhance efficiency and reduce delays at Phoenix’s busiest airport.

PHOENIX – Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport will receive an additional $84.3 million in federal funding for the construction of its new 2,100-foot taxiway bridge, Arizona Representative Greg Stanton announced.

The Taxiway U project, designed to connect the airport’s north and south airfields on the west end, is expected to streamline operations and reduce delays at the airport, which accommodates over 8 million passengers annually. Currently, the airport’s only taxiways are located on the east end.

Construction on the bridge has already begun, with completion anticipated by 2027.

Improving Efficiency and Supporting the Economy

The new taxiway is part of a larger effort to make Sky Harbor one of the nation’s most efficient airports. “This investment under the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law means reduced taxi times and delays,” Stanton said in a press release. “Whether Phoenix is a layover or your final destination, you’re getting where you want to go quicker.”

Stanton also highlighted the broader economic impact of the project, noting that Sky Harbor is a vital hub for both passengers and cargo. “Even if you don’t fly that often, you have a stake in what is happening here. Thousands of tons of cargo arrive daily, supporting local businesses, the state economy, and global markets,” he added.

Funding Breakdown

The Taxiway U project has a total budget of $332.9 million, with $279.5 million allocated for construction. Federal support under the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law accounts for approximately $200 million of the funding, while the remainder will be covered through Passenger Facility Charges and airport revenue.

This significant investment underscores the importance of Sky Harbor in driving economic growth, creating jobs, and improving travel experiences for millions of passengers.
