Sky Harbor Adds New Nonstop International Flight

In December, American Airlines will launch a direct nonstop flight between Phoenix and Chihuahua, Mexico.

With this newest flight addition, American now offers 10 direct routes to Mexican cities from Sky Harbor. This will be the only direct flight from Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport to Chihuahua, Mexico’s largest state.

The flight is scheduled to operate daily, all year long. For this flight, American Airlines will use a Bombardier CRJ-700 jet, which holds between 65 and 76 seats. The flights to Chihuahua are scheduled to start on December 18th.

The airline’s announcement comes as American pushes to increase service from their top U.S. hubs to Mexico and the Caribbean. It is also adding seasonal service from Dallas to Acapulco and new flights to the Caribbean islands of Grenada, St. Thomas, Bermuda and St. Lucia from the Charlotte, Dallas, New York and Chicago hubs.

“As we looked at our Latin America and Caribbean network, we saw some unique opportunities to grow, providing more service to the places our customers value most,” said Vasu Raja, American’s vice president of network and schedule planning, in a statement.

In 2018, it was reported that more than 20 million passengers used American to fly into or out of Phoenix. Currently, American is the largest airline operating at Sky Harbor.

In addition to the flight to Mexico, American Airlines also announced a new direct route from Phoenix to Rapid City, South Dakota. This year-round flight will operate daily and is scheduled to start September 4th. American plans to use a 50-seat CRJ-200 for the Phoenix to Rapid City route.
