Secret Life of Pets Brings Animal Emotions to Life

The Secret Life of Pets is a family-friendly, adventure-packed animated movie. The story is very creative and unique, despite the fact that the New York City adventure theme has been done countless times. The characters are lovable and most have personality traits stereotypical to the type of animal or breed they are, such as an apathetic cat, which may seem like a lazy move but actually translates hilariously in this movie.  It has some unexpected heroes and villains and unique twists and turns.

The movie is practically non-stop action and adventure, which is both captivating and tiring. One negative aspect of the movie is it seemed to leave some open ends and leave the audience wondering what happened here and there. Furthermore, some scenes seemed to lack the proper due emotion or depth, feeling callous from time to time. There is an ever-present sense of peril that either will make children feel uncomfortable or fly right over their heads. Despite these flaws, however, the movie was still engaging and charming, leaving me wanting to watch it again and again.

It is very mindful of its modern audience and appeals to both children and adults. Kids will enjoy the cute characters and giggle-worthy, childish jokes while the adults will enjoy the unique and offbeat story and wise humor. The animation quality and vibrant colors are a visual marvel, even with Disney as its competitor.  The wide-view, detailed animations of the New York City skyline are breathtaking.

It is very apparent that the people behind the scenes did their homework and knew the ins and outs of the city prior to making this movie, and it certainly paid off! The Secret Life of Pets has bountiful amounts of zest and authenticity, making it a wonderful movie for people of all ages.
