Scottsdale Man Arrested After Firing on Police Vehicles and Standoff With SWAT

Authorities say 27-year-old Vaughan Hanson opened fire from inside his home, damaging police vehicles and prompting a tense standoff before surrendering peacefully.

A quiet Scottsdale neighborhood was jolted by gunfire Sunday afternoon when police say a 27-year-old man barricaded himself inside his home and fired several shots at officers and nearby property.

According to the Scottsdale Police Department, Vaughan Hanson allegedly began shooting from inside his residence near Earll Drive and Westwood Street around 1 p.m. Multiple neighbors reported hearing the gunfire and called authorities.

When officers arrived, several bullets struck two unoccupied police vehicles parked outside, causing visible damage. Rounds also hit a neighboring apartment building and parts of Hanson’s own home, police said. Remarkably, no one was injured in the incident, and officers did not return fire.

As tactical teams and crisis negotiators responded, nearby homes were evacuated for safety. Hanson reportedly refused to come out for more than an hour before finally surrendering to police just after 2:30 p.m.

Inside the home, detectives recovered a handgun and several shell casings. Hanson was taken into custody and booked into the Maricopa County Jail. He faces multiple felony charges, including 13 counts of aggravated assault on an officer, 13 counts of endangerment, and several weapons-related offenses.

The Scottsdale Police Department continues to investigate the circumstances leading up to the shooting.
