Scottsdale Fashion Square To Transform Department Store Into Office Space

What used to be a Barney’s New York at the Scottsdale Fashion Square will now be a shared office space, beginning in 2019. This co-working space will be an option that Macerich plans to roll out in several of its properties across the nation.  Industrious, another Manhattan based company has over 50 shared workspaces across 33 cities, plans to be one of the tenants in this new property. They will occupy the two stories that once held Barney’s fashion and jewelry.

The store has been vacant since 2016, when Barney’s closed the only Arizona location after six years in business. The co-working space will be 33,000 square feet, and is located at the mall’s east corner near Camelback and Scottsdale roads.

Kim Choukalas, the vice president of leasing for Macerich said that they were looking for an addition that would set them apart from competition, and take on a new edge in the retail world. Industrious, the new tenant, plans to allow 40-50 companies to work in their new private office space. They’ll also share areas like coffee lounges, and conference rooms. The CEO, Jamie Hodari, said that the mall provides many amenities that will make the office space more than desirable. The company rents private offices to companies like Lyft, Pandora, and individual memberships that rent private desks for the day. Hodari said that the Phoenix market is valued in the real estate world,  and that they as a company value settings like Scottsdale to integrate city and urban life.
