Scottsdale is ramping up its food assistance efforts through a set of new partnerships, expanded distribution sites and a key upgrade that will allow the city to move perishable food more safely and efficiently.
City officials say the coordinated push — led by Scottsdale Human Services and supported by a broad network of nonprofits, healthcare providers and regional food agencies — is designed to close service gaps and reach more seniors and families facing food insecurity. The Scottsdale Food Resources Group, which includes organizations such as Scottsdale Community Partners, NOAH, Duet Partners in Aging, the Area Agency on Aging, HonorHealth, Blue Zones Project Scottsdale and others, continues to guide those efforts.
The city-operated Scottsdale Food Bank recently increased its capacity and now serves up to 120 households each week. Support from local grocers and weekly emergency boxes from St. Mary’s Food Bank help sustain the growing demand. Scottsdale Human Services is also preparing to expand distribution through additional locations, including Paiute Neighborhood Center, Granite Reef Senior Center, Vista del Camino and Via Linda Senior Center.
A major development is the retrofitting of the Food Bank’s new box truck, which will soon include refrigeration. The upgrade — funded through donations from Blue Zones Project Scottsdale, HonorHealth and the Scottsdale Firefighters Association — will allow the city to transport fresh produce, dairy and other perishable items without compromising food safety.
The city is also bolstering nutrition programs for older adults. The Brown Bag Program, which provides supplemental groceries and special holiday meals, currently supports 120 seniors and is preparing to grow to as many as 200 participants. Additional support, such as gift cards for residents with dietary restrictions, is coordinated through Scottsdale Community Partners and allied agencies.
Scottsdale Food Bank is now seeking volunteers, especially those able to assist with grocery pickups using the upgraded refrigerated truck. The organization also plans to refresh its Amazon Wish List to better reflect current needs.
