Prescott Police Officer Indicted for Manslaughter in 2024 Fatal Shooting

Grand jury charges officer in case involving unarmed man’s death

PHOENIX — A Prescott police officer has been indicted in connection to a deadly shooting that took place in June 2024, officials confirmed Wednesday.

Officer Brian Sutton, 26, was charged with one count of manslaughter by a Yavapai County Grand Jury following an investigation conducted by the Arizona Department of Public Safety. The announcement was made by the Maricopa County Attorney’s Office, which handled the case.

Details of the incident

The indictment stems from the fatal shooting of 34-year-old Daniel Leslie.

On June 7, 2024, officers responded to a domestic violence call at a Prescott residence near Rosser Street and Willow Creek Road. By the time officers arrived, Leslie had already left the scene.

Police returned to the home the next day and found Leslie outside. Authorities say that after officers gave commands, Leslie ran toward the home. At that point, Officer Sutton shot him.

Leslie was taken to a hospital but later died from his injuries.

Investigators later determined that Leslie was unarmed at the time of the shooting.

The case has sparked renewed conversations around use-of-force procedures and accountability in officer-involved shootings. The investigation remains ongoing.
