Charles Smith Faces Felony and Misdemeanor Charges After Filming Reckless Prank for Social Media

PHOENIX — A Mesa man was arrested after filming himself spraying pesticide on produce and other foods at a Walmart store, authorities said.

Charles Smith, 27, entered the Walmart at 1955 S. Stapley Drive on December 19, reportedly intending to record pranks for social media. Instead, police said he grabbed a can of Hot Shot Ultra Bed Bug and Flea Killer without paying for it and sprayed it on vegetables, fruit, and rotisserie chickens available for purchase.

Smith recorded himself during the act, capturing his face and the pesticide can in the video, which he later posted online.

Charges Against Smith

After turning himself in, Smith admitted to the theft and spraying the pesticide. He faces the following charges:

  • Introducing Poison (Class 6 Felony)
  • Criminal Damage (Class 1 Misdemeanor)
  • Endangerment (Class 1 Misdemeanor)
  • Theft (Class 1 Misdemeanor)
