Plasma Donations Needed in Arizona for COVID Treatment

Arizona blood supply leader Vitalant is asking fully recovered coronavirus survivors to donate convalescent plasma to aid those currently fighting COVID-19 in hospitals.

Convalescent plasma treatment — which contains antibodies required to combat the coronavirus — is the only antibody treatment approved by the FDA available to patients hospitalized due to COVID-19.

According to the blood supplier, the need for convalescent plasma has outpaced donations in the state of Arizona by more than 400%.

Recovered coronavirus patients must meet certain requirements in order to be eligible to donate convalescent plasma.

Eligibility requirements include a prior laboratory diagnosis of COVID-19 either via a positive swab test or positive test for antibodies and being symptom-free for at least 28 days in addition to the donor eligibility requirements.

Vitalant will be testing all blood donations for antibodies through the end of August.

Donors will be able to see their results within three weeks of donation by logging into their online donor account.

Those that test positive for having antibodies are strongly encouraged to apply online to become convalescent plasma donors to help current COVID-19 hospital patients once eligibility requirements are met.

More information and applications to be a convalescent plasma donor can be found online or by calling 877-258-4825.
