Grand Canyon National Park is contending with a series of pipeline breaks that have disrupted operations near the North Rim and led to temporary closures at several popular visitor spots.
According to park officials, three sections of pipeline along the rugged North Kaibab Trail — a 14-mile route connecting the North Rim to the Colorado River — ruptured last week. The breaks prompted the closure of Phantom Ranch Canteen, one of the park’s most remote lodges, beginning Saturday. Water service has also been shut off at Bright Angel Campground, Boat Beach, and the Delta restrooms while crews work on repairs.
Utility teams are now excavating the damaged areas and preparing the pipes for welding in an effort to restore service by Jan. 24. In a separate incident, a frozen pipe burst near the South Kaibab Trailhead, causing additional water shutdowns along portions of the Grand Canyon trail network.
The recent issues come just weeks after the park began reopening South Rim hotels, following months of restrictions tied to maintenance on the Transcanyon Waterline — the same system responsible for delivering water to many of the park’s most remote locations.
Park updates and visitor advisories are available through the Grand Canyon National Park website.
