Nearly 1,500 Republican voters in Pinal County will receive replacement mail ballots after officials discovered printing errors affecting local precinct committeeman races ahead of Arizona’s July primary election.
The issue came to light after a voter reported receiving a ballot with incorrect information. An investigation by the Pinal County Recorder’s Office found that 1,468 ballots mailed to voters in precincts 28 and 136 contained errors in the Republican precinct committeeman contests. County officials said all other races on the ballots were printed correctly.
The county has canceled the affected ballots to ensure they cannot be counted and is mailing corrected replacements along with an explanation of the error. Officials encouraged impacted voters to use only the replacement ballot when casting their vote.
The incident has also highlighted a disagreement over responsibility for the mistake. Pinal County attributed the error to a vendor supporting the Arizona Secretary of State’s voter registration database, while the Secretary of State’s Office said counties are ultimately responsible for verifying ballot accuracy before they are printed and distributed. The office noted that similar issues were identified and corrected in Cochise and Yuma counties before ballots were mailed, limiting the problem to Pinal County.
The replacement effort comes shortly after early ballots were mailed for Arizona’s July 21 primary election, underscoring the importance of ballot verification as election officials prepare for the state’s 2026 election cycle.
