Pinal County Man Charged After Allegedly Kidnapping Ex-Girlfriend, Killing Her Dog

Suspect accused of desert abduction and animal cruelty in May incident

PHOENIX — A Pinal County man is facing felony charges after allegedly kidnapping his estranged girlfriend and killing her dog in a remote desert area, officials announced Tuesday.

Peri Cann, 34, has been charged with kidnapping and intentionally killing a domestic animal, according to the Pinal County Attorney’s Office. The charges stem from an incident in May that is still under investigation by the Eloy Police Department. Cann remains in custody at the Pinal County Jail on a $200,000 secured bond.

Investigators say Cann forced the woman and her dog into a vehicle and drove them to the desert. Once there, he allegedly gave her an ultimatum: either kill the dog herself or lure her current boyfriend to the remote location. When she refused both options, Cann reportedly shot and killed the dog, leaving the body in the desert.

After the incident, the victim led police to the area where the dog was killed and showed them a video in which Cann allegedly admitted to the killing.

Cann is scheduled to appear in court for a pretrial conference on August 25.
