A pickup truck driver died early Monday morning after colliding head-on with a Valley Metro bus in southwest Phoenix, according to authorities.
The crash occurred just before 4 a.m. near 51st Avenue and Lower Buckeye Road, the Phoenix Police Departmentsaid. Emergency crews rushed the pickup truck driver to a nearby hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.
Officials confirmed that no one aboard the bus was injured in the collision. Detectives remained on the scene for several hours, shutting down Buckeye Road between 49th and 51st avenues while they investigated.
Preliminary findings suggest the driver of the pickup crossed into oncoming traffic, striking the bus head-on. The Phoenix Fire Department assisted at the scene, and police say the cause of the crash remains under investigation.
Traffic in the area is expected to be delayed until the roadway reopens. Motorists are advised to use alternate routes and monitor updates from Phoenix Police for road closure information.
