Phoenix Public Transit has successfully launched its first fleet of hybrid buses, marking a pivotal step in the city’s initiative to transition to a zero-emissions fleet by 2040. These New Flyer Xcelsior Hybrid-Electric buses, featuring a combination of hybrid-electric motors and biodiesel engines, offer enhanced fuel efficiency, reduced emissions, and quieter operation. The buses are now in service across Phoenix, accommodating up to 53 passengers with a range exceeding 500 miles.
Mayor Kate Gallego expressed her pride in Phoenix’s leadership role in environmental sustainability, stating, “Phoenix is proud to lead the charge towards a greener future where our residents can breathe cleaner air while getting them to their destinations. As we aim to be the most sustainable desert city in the world, we are doing our part to cut emissions, adopt the latest technology, and encourage residents to make climate-conscious decisions. I’m excited to see our brand-new buses hit the road to serve Phoenicians.”
Public Transit Director Jesús Sapien emphasized the department’s commitment to providing reliable and environmentally friendly transit solutions, adding that the introduction of cleaner energy buses enhances the overall service for Phoenix residents.
This rollout is part of a larger initiative supported by a Federal Transit Administration grant, which aids in replacing aging buses with advanced battery electric and hydrogen fuel-cell models, building necessary infrastructure, and developing a skilled workforce to maintain the modern fleet. Currently, Phoenix Public Transit operates a diverse fleet of 500 heavy-duty buses using alternative fuels, including natural gas and biodiesel.
The Phoenix Public Transit Department is the largest member of the Valley Metro regional transit system, offering a wide range of transportation options funded through local, county, and federal sources. The Transportation 2050 (T2050) initiative, approved by Phoenix voters in 2015, funds public transit and transportation improvements, including enhanced bus services and technological upgrades. Under the guidance of the Citizens Transportation Commission, T2050 supports the city’s vision of sustainable urban mobility, aligning with Phoenix’s mission to be the most sustainable desert city in the world
