PHOENIX — The Phoenix Zoo is set to open a new habitat dedicated to Arizona’s big cats this spring. The exhibit, called “Big Cats of Arizona: A Bridge to Arizona Wilderness,” will officially open on April 5, 2025, giving visitors an up-close look at jaguars and mountain lions in a more expansive and immersive environment.
The $5.3 million project, created in partnership with the Arizona Center for Nature Conservation, began construction in November 2023 with the goal of increasing space for the zoo’s two jaguars, Caipora and Saban.
Additionally, the zoo’s mountain lion sisters, Sierra and Mystic, will move into a habitat five times larger than their current space, providing them with more room to roam.
What to Expect in the New Habitat
The Big Cats of Arizona exhibit will offer guests:
- Multiple viewing angles and large windows for close-up observation of the cats.
- A unique catwalk that allows the animals to walk above the viewing area, giving visitors a dynamic, overhead perspective.
Zoo Leaders Emphasize Conservation and Education
“Big Cats of Arizona is an exciting and necessary expansion that will not only enhance the well-being of these incredible animals but also provide an unparalleled experience for our guests,” said Bert Castro, President and CEO of the Phoenix Zoo.
“Mountain lions and jaguars are vital parts of Arizona’s ecosystem, yet they are rarely seen in the wild. This new habitat will allow us to educate the public about their historical ranges and the importance of conserving these species for future generations.”
The Phoenix Zoo, a leader in wildlife conservation, continues to invest in projects that expand and improve animal habitats while providing an educational experience for visitors. The new Big Cats of Arizona exhibit is expected to be a major attraction when it debuts in April.
