Phoenix Zoo Mourns the Loss of Howard the Rhino at 27

Beloved Southern White Rhino Succumbs to Meningitis and Sepsis After 27 Years

Phoenix, AZ – The Phoenix Zoo announced with heavy hearts on Sunday that Howard, a 27-year-old southern white rhinoceros, has passed away. After battling meningitis and sepsis, the zoo’s veterinary team made the difficult decision to euthanize Howard when treatments proved ineffective.

Howard had been a cherished member of the zoo since 2020, known for his gentle nature and fondness for interacting with his keepers. “He was always happy to spend time near his keepers, especially if it meant getting a good scratch,” said the Hoofstock team in a statement. “He will be greatly missed by everyone on our team.”

Born in 1997 at White Oak Conservation Center in Florida, Howard arrived at the Phoenix Zoo after a 31-hour journey from the Brevard Zoo in Melbourne, Florida. He quickly became a favorite among staff and visitors alike.

The zoo’s female white rhino, LouLou, remains the last of her species at the Phoenix Zoo. Further pathology tests are expected to provide additional insight into Howard’s condition in the coming weeks.
