Phoenix officials are urging residents to rethink backyard fireworks this Independence Day as new fire restrictions and tougher penalties take effect during one of the state’s highest wildfire risk periods.
City leaders gathered at the Phoenix Fire Regional Training Academy this week to highlight updated fireworks regulations under the city’s Stage 1 Fire Restrictions. The most significant change prohibits all fireworks—including those that are otherwise legal under Arizona law—within one mile of desert preserves, regional parks, and other designated open-space areas.
Officials said enforcement has also been strengthened this year. Violators may face civil penalties of up to $2,500 or misdemeanor criminal charges that carry potential jail time. Repeat offenders face steeper consequences, and Phoenix police now have expanded authority to seize and destroy illegal fireworks.
Rather than using consumer fireworks, the city is encouraging residents to attend professionally managed displays hosted throughout Phoenix over the holiday weekend. Officials say the restrictions are intended to reduce wildfire risk, prevent injuries, and lessen the strain on police and fire crews, which typically experience a surge in emergency calls during the Fourth of July.
The safety campaign comes as Arizona enters the peak of wildfire season, with active fires burning across parts of northern Arizona and elevated fire danger persisting across much of the state.
