Phoenix Urges ‘Healthy Giving’ This Holiday Season to Support Long-Term Solutions

City campaign encourages residents to give through trusted nonprofits rather than direct street donations

The City of Phoenix is encouraging residents to rethink how they help people experiencing homelessness this holiday season, promoting a “Healthy Giving” approach that channels donations to organizations equipped to provide long-term support.

City officials say the campaign is aimed at steering well-intentioned generosity toward programs that offer housing assistance, job training, mental-health care and other services proven to help people move off the streets. While cash or goods given directly to individuals may feel immediately compassionate, the city argues that nonprofit providers are better positioned to deliver lasting impact.

Mayor Kate Gallego framed the effort as a citywide call for thoughtful, community-driven support, while the Office of Homeless Solutions emphasized that targeted giving helps ensure dignity and stability for those rebuilding their lives. The Healthy Giving model encourages residents to donate high-need items — such as canned food, bottled water, hygiene supplies and new clothing essentials — or contribute funds to established service providers.

Residents are also encouraged to volunteer with shelters, food banks and outreach organizations, and to report encampments or individuals who may need services through the PHX C.A.R.E.S. system at myphx311 or by calling 602-262-6251.

The city says coordinated giving helps reduce unintended consequences for both unsheltered residents and surrounding neighborhoods, while strengthening the network of providers working to address homelessness across Phoenix.

Volunteer opportunities, donation lists and additional guidance are available at GiveSmartAZ.org, the city’s central hub for Healthy Giving resources.
