Phoenix Union Boosts Campus Safety After Deadly Stabbing at Maryvale High

District increases police presence and reviews security procedures after classroom tragedy

MARYVALE, Ariz. — The Phoenix Union High School District is rolling out new safety measures following the fatal stabbing of a student inside a Maryvale High School classroom last week.

District officials confirmed that additional police officers will be present on campuses while a full review of security procedures is underway. The move comes as families and community members press for stronger protections to prevent further violence.

Earlier this year, Phoenix Union installed advanced weapons detection systems across all schools in the district, including Maryvale. Despite those systems being in place, the recent tragedy — which stemmed from a dispute between two students — has renewed urgency around how campuses are monitored and how conflicts are addressed before they escalate.

Parents and residents have raised questions about the effectiveness of existing school safety officers compared to school resource officers, asking whether staffing models or training need to change.

The Maricopa County Attorney’s Office and Chandler Police Department will host a community forum on teen violence on Wednesday, Aug. 27, from 6–8 p.m. at the Chandler Public Safety Center. The event will provide resources for families and discuss strategies to recognize warning signs in teenagers.

Phoenix Union leaders say the district will continue refining safety practices with the goal of creating a secure learning environment for all students.
