National Dance Day was established in 2010 by Nigel Lythgoe, producer, choreographer, creator and of the television series So You Think You Can Dance. The day began in an effort to get people of all ages moving, and to create awareness for what dance is really all about.  Nigel wanted to demonstrate that dance has the power to motivate, heal, and inspire everyone to stay healthy.  Along with his Foundation, Dizzy Feet, Nigel has expanded National Dance Day year after year with the help of So You Think You Can Dance and supporters such as Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton and First Lady Michelle Obama. 

Every year, on the last Saturday in July, people all over America come together and have fun in free dance classes, aerobics, Zumba, and whatever else keeps them active.  Professional choreographers and dancers work together to create an official routine for the year and everyone is encouraged to post videos of themselves or groups performing this routine.  This year’s routine is set to Meghan Trainor’s song, “Dance Like Yo Daddy.”  There is an instructional video online with easy to follow steps that everyone is encouraged to learn, dance, and post online.
