Phoenix Sky Harbor Prepares for Busy Summer Travel Season Ahead of Holiday Rush

Airport officials urge travelers to reserve parking early, arrive ahead of flights and take advantage of new tools designed to ease congestion

With Memorial Day weekend marking the unofficial start of summer travel, Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport is preparing for another busy season as vacationers, holiday travelers and soccer fans pass through Arizona’s largest airport.

Airport officials released a series of travel recommendations this week aimed at helping passengers navigate expected crowds during the summer months. In addition to traditional vacation travel, Phoenix Sky Harbor anticipates increased passenger activity tied to this summer’s international soccer tournament across North America, with some fans using Phoenix as a travel hub.

Among the airport’s top recommendations is reserving parking in advance through Phoenix Sky Harbor parking reservations, especially during peak travel periods. Travelers are also encouraged to check flight statuses before heading to the airport and arrive at least two hours early for domestic flights and three hours early for international departures.

Airport officials also reminded passengers that the Transportation Security Administration is now enforcing REAL ID requirements for domestic air travel. Travelers without compliant identification could face additional screening and delays at checkpoints.

To help streamline security lines, Sky Harbor continues offering PHX RESERVE, a free program that allows travelers to book a TSA checkpoint time slot up to six days before departure.

Officials are also encouraging travelers to use the PHX Sky Train® stations at 24th Street and 44th Street to avoid heavy curbside traffic near terminals. The airport’s Early Bag Check program remains available as well, allowing passengers on participating airlines to drop checked luggage at select off-site locations before heading to terminals.

For passengers needing extra assistance, the airport’s Compassion Cacti™ program offers green lanyards that discreetly signal travelers may require additional support or more time navigating the airport. Volunteer Navigators in purple vests will also be stationed throughout terminals to assist visitors during the busy travel season.

Phoenix Sky Harbor recently introduced a new AI-powered digital assistant named Amelia, which provides real-time answers to common airport questions related to parking, amenities, shops and services through the airport’s website.
