Phoenix Sky Harbor Airport Art Contest Calls for Submissions

If you’re a professional artist and want your creation to be featured in Terminal 3 of the Sky Harbor International Airport then you’re in luck. Phoenix’s Office of Arts and Culture wants to look at your submissions, and show it to the rest of the world!

The current project is part of the initiative that is meant to modernize the terminal. While the whole initiative is set to be completed in 2020 the call for artists has already been made. The deadline for submissions is 29th of July by 5PM. The call for artists is for two projects. Selection panels will review all of the art submissions. The finalists will then move onto to the interview stage. The final approval and awarding of a contract is expected to take place early fall.

The public art project manager for the city, Rebecca Rothman, said that the submitted art work for the atrium project can use any two-dimensional medium. However, it should be welcoming, bold, dynamic, and should highlight travelling, and the desert life of Arizona. The said art work will be displayed on a wall, a 13 foot by 93 foot space, in the East Arrivals Atrium.

Up to five sculptures will also be purchased for the West Plaza project. While the artwork itself doesn’t necessarily need to be desert-themed, it needs to fit in a desert-themed environment. Due to the plaza having native flora, a dog park, walkways and seating, the sculptures need to compliment the overall aesthetic of the vicinity.

If you feel that you have what it takes to be considered as a contender in the current two art projects then go ahead and make sure you submit before the deadline. Having public art work displayed in the busy Sky Harbor Airport is exposure most artists can only dream of.
