Phoenix Shred-A-Thon to Help Prevent Identity Theft

Arizona residents will soon have the chance to have sensitive documents shredded. he The Maricopa County Attorney’s Office, International Paper, CBS 5 are offering residents the ability to shred personal documents for free.

Shred-a-thon 2018 will be held on Monday, April 16, from 4:30 a.m.-7 p.m. at International Paper’s Phoenix recycling location.

There is a limit of 15 banker boxes per person, and the boxes shouldn’t be taped or sealed in any way. Organizers are asking consumers to avoid using plastic bags.

Organizers recommend consumers to shred documents with sensitive information because it helps prevent identity theft. You should bring any documents you want shredded, including: tax returns older than five years, bank and credit card statements, utility bills, and medical bills.

Papers containing staples and paper clips can go through the shredders just fine. Those big spring clips, however, are a problem. Please be sure to remove them.

You may take your boxes home if you like or leave them for International Paper to recycle.

The 2017 Shred-a-thon saw 2,600 vehicles with 201 tons of paper. Thousands of people helped prevent themselves from being victims of identity theft, and you should too.
