After nearly two months of closure, Echo Canyon Trail on Camelback Mountain has officially reopened to hikers. The City of Phoenix Parks and Recreation Department announced that the popular trail welcomed visitors again starting at sunrise on December 14, 2025, following an extensive safety and stabilization project.
The closure, which began in mid-October, came after heavy storms caused severe erosion and left several large boulders unstable along the route. Engineers determined the conditions posed a risk to hikers, prompting the city to temporarily shut down the area for assessment and repairs.
Working with geotechnical and civil engineering experts, city crews carried out a remediation plan to stabilize the terrain. The process involved reinforcing loose boulders and injecting them with expanding grout to secure their positions. While the trail is now deemed safe for public use, officials noted that some construction activity will continue as teams finish installing new safety cables to replace the old guiding ropes.
“We appreciate the community’s patience while our teams completed this critical safety work,” said Cynthia Aguilar, director of the Parks and Recreation Department. “Echo Canyon is one of our most popular and challenging trails, and this work was essential to ensuring visitors can enjoy it with confidence.”
City officials are reminding hikers to review “Take a Hike. Do it Right.” guidelines and check for any trail updates or advisories before heading out. More information on Phoenix trails and safety tips can be found on the City of Phoenix Parks website.
