Phoenix Ranked in Top 10 for Affordable Housing Construction

Over 1,000 units underway as Arizona tackles housing crisis

PHOENIX — Metro Phoenix is now among the top 10 cities in the nation for affordable housing units under construction, according to a recent report from real estate analytics firm Yardi Matrix.

The ranking highlights more than 1,000 units currently being built in the area, with only cities like Austin and Miami ahead. The growth is part of Arizona’s broader push to ease its housing affordability crisis.

“Increasing housing options for Arizona’s workforce is the single greatest tool for attracting new and expanding businesses,” said Courtney LeVinus, CEO of the Arizona Multihousing Association.

Despite the progress, the state still faces a major housing shortage, especially as the Phoenix metro area adds roughly 200 new residents daily. Developers are shifting focus to infill projects within city limits due to restrictions on water use in outer suburbs.

Efforts are also supported by the federal and state Low Income Housing Tax Credit (LIHTC) programs. One such project, Centerline on Glendale, recently opened with nearly 370 affordable units. Advocates are pushing to renew the state LIHTC program, which is set to expire this year.
