Phoenix Public Transit Making Significant Progress Towards T2050 Shade Goal

Learn More About the Transportation 2050 Plan

Since the City of Phoenix voters approved the Transportation 2050 (T2050) program in 2015, the Phoenix Public Transit Department has been diligently working to enhance public transit and key infrastructure. This year, the Public Transit team reports significant progress towards its T2050 goal of installing at least 80 bus stop shade structures annually.

The T2050 plan, developed by a citizen-led committee comprising transportation experts and community advocates, addresses a wide range of concerns expressed by residents who drive, bike, walk, and use public transit. The overarching aim is to improve the quality and accessibility of Phoenix’s transit system.

As of June 2, 2024, Phoenix Public Transit has installed a total of 613 new bus stop shelters. The ultimate goal is to provide shade at each of the city’s 4,000 bus stops, considering feasibility factors such as location, visibility, and traffic restrictions. The installation of these shelters began in 2018, focusing initially on routes and intersections with the highest ridership.

Annual Numbers of Shade Installations

  • 2018: 106
  • 2019: 66
  • 2020: 96
  • 2021: 60
  • 2022: 150
  • 2023: 92
  • 2024 (as of June 2): 43

In addition to new installations, the Phoenix Public Transit Facilities team actively responds to reports of damaged or unusable bus stop shelters. Basic repairs are typically completed within 5-10 business days, while more extensive repairs may take longer. These shelters provide essential protection and comfort for riders waiting for their buses, making it crucial to address any damage promptly. Riders are encouraged to report any issues to Valley Metro Customer Service.
