Phoenix is preparing for a milestone moment this weekend as the city hosts its first-ever Phoenix Marathon, an event expected to draw thousands of runners and spectators from across the region.
The race takes place Saturday, Dec. 13, with more than 7,000 participants signed up to compete in one of three distances: the full marathon, half marathon, or 10K. City officials say the event marks a significant step in establishing Phoenix as a destination for large-scale endurance events.
Festivities begin a day earlier with a Health & Lifestyle Expo on Friday, Dec. 12, at the Phoenix Convention Center. The free, public event will feature race packet pickup, marathon merchandise, sponsor exhibits, and wellness-focused vendors, giving residents a chance to take part even if they aren’t running.
Race day activity will start early, with the marathon kicking off at 7 a.m. To keep runners and spectators safe, several major roadways will experience closures and delays throughout the morning and early afternoon. Areas expected to be impacted include sections near Glendale and Central avenues around the half marathon start, Camelback Road between 24th and 40th streets, and the Phoenix Municipal Stadium area, where runners will cross the finish line.
Organizers estimate roads along the course will gradually reopen by about 1:30 p.m., though drivers are encouraged to plan ahead and allow extra travel time. A full course map and detailed list of road closures is available on the official Phoenix Marathon website at phxmarathon.com.
Residents with questions or concerns about traffic or neighborhood access can reach event organizers by email at [email protected] or by calling the marathon hotline at 623-252-2485.
City leaders say the marathon is expected to bring energy to downtown Phoenix while showcasing the city’s growing running and fitness community — even if it means a few temporary detours along the way.
