Phoenix Predator Sentenced to 20 Years for Brutal Attack on 70-Year-Old Woman

Defendant Sentenced for Kidnapping and Attempted Sexual Assault

Phoenix, AZ – Maricopa County Attorney Rachel Mitchell has announced that Brian Kibiwot Chuchuney, 30, has been sentenced to 20 years in prison for the assault and attempted sexual assault of a 70-year-old woman in downtown Phoenix.

The incident occurred on December 17, 2023, when the victim, working as an overnight receptionist at an apartment building near Jefferson Street, mistakenly allowed Chuchuney into the building, believing him to be a resident. After asking for water, Chuchuney followed the victim, attempted to sexually assault her, and then sexually abused her. He fled the scene, taking the victim’s clothing. Police located and arrested Chuchuney a few hours later.

Chuchuney pleaded guilty in July 2024 to one count of kidnapping and two counts of attempted sexual assault. He was sentenced to 20 years in prison for kidnapping and will be placed on lifetime supervised probation for the attempted sexual assault charges.

In a statement to the court, the victim described the lasting impact of the attack on her life, saying that the emotional and physical trauma has shattered her life and severely affected her ability to work.

Maricopa County Attorney Rachel Mitchell commended Deputy County Attorney Maren Sorensen for her work in securing justice for the victim, ensuring Chuchuney faces the consequences of his actions.
