A domestic violence call in north Phoenix ended in an officer-involved shooting after police say a man armed with a knife pursued another person outside a home, prompting officers to use deadly force.
Phoenix police responded around 11 p.m. Friday to a reported domestic disturbance near 35th Avenue and Greenway Road. Officers first contacted a woman outside the residence before an adult man allegedly emerged from the home carrying a knife and began chasing another man who was standing in the driveway.
According to police, officers repeatedly ordered the man to drop the knife, but he continued pursuing the other individual. Officers then fired their weapons, striking the suspect. After the shooting, officers rendered medical aid until paramedics arrived.
The man was transported to a hospital in critical condition. No officers were injured, and police said there are no outstanding suspects connected to the incident.
As is standard procedure in Phoenix officer-involved shootings, the Arizona Department of Public Safety’s Major Incident Division has assumed responsibility for the investigation. The agency will review the circumstances surrounding the use of force before its findings are forwarded for prosecutorial review.
