Phoenix police identify victim in deadly altercation; suspect held on $1M bond

Investigators say a fight inside a central Phoenix home left a 44-year-old man dead and led to multiple felony charges against a 32-year-old suspect.

Phoenix police have identified the man killed in a homicide investigation last week as 44-year-old Billy Joe Carrethers, according to authorities.

Officers were called around 9 p.m. on May 7 to a residence near 24th and Oak streets after reports of an unspecified disturbance. When police arrived, they discovered Carrethers dead inside the home, officials said.

Detectives later determined that Carrethers was allegedly killed during a confrontation inside the residence. Investigators identified 32-year-old Christopher Ebanks as the suspect connected to the fatal incident.

Ebanks was arrested the following day and booked into jail on charges that include first-degree murder, kidnapping and a probation violation. Court records show he is being held on a bond set at more than $1 million.

Police said no other suspects are believed to be involved in the case.

The investigation remains ongoing.
